The Tuscan dialect is known as Italian (Italiano) and is the offical language of Italy. It is the main language of literature and the media. Each region of Italy also has its own dialect, some of which are so distinct from standard Italian that they are mutually unintelligible. The Sicilian dialect for example, is sometimes regarded as a separate language and has a literary tradition older than Italian itself. And it is recognized as a minority language in three other countries: Slovenia, Croatia and Brazil.

Slightly more than one million people speak Italian in the United States, although the number of Americans with Italian roots is far higher, at around 17 million.

Italian is the fourth most studied language in the world - an impressive feat, considering Italy's relatively small size.

Level A1 - Basic

The A1 level indicates that the student has just begun to engage with Italian as a second language

Level A2 - Learner

A2 level indicates a slightly more involved engagement and increased competencies still in formation.

Level B1 Independent - Uno

Basic level of competence in using Italian with autonomy in authentic everyday contexts.

Level B2 Independent - Due

Competence demonstrates the ability to use the basics of the language in a wide variety of contexts and situations. At this level, users are capable of using Italian to communicate effectively while staying in Italy, be it for study, work or pleasure. Possession of the certificate at this level allows students from outside the EU to register for university courses without having to undertake further assessment of their Italian.

Level C1 Competent - Tre

Represents superior competencies in using the Italian language. The user at this level is able to use Italian effectively in a much wider range of contexts, including atypical situations, formal contexts, in dealing with public and commercial agencies.

Level C2 Competent    - Quattro

Is an advanced level approaching "native speaker". The user has a mastery of Italian in all formal and informal situations and the capacity to effectively use the language in professional contexts.
